2.4 Mobile wallet¶
Connect a phone wallet to your node, at home and on the go.
| Wallet | Platforms | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cake Wallet | Android, iOS | Multi-currency, supports custom nodes and Tor |
| Monerujo | Android | Monero-only, long-standing, works with onion nodes through Orbot |
| Stack Wallet | Android, iOS | Multi-currency, built-in Tor |
Install only from the official store listing or the project's website, and check that the developer name matches.
Download over Tor
On Android, F-Droid can download apps through Tor: install Orbot, then enable Use Tor in F-Droid's settings. Monerujo and Cake Wallet are available there. Apple's App Store can't download over Tor.
Connection options¶
Add a custom node:
- Address:
NODE_IP - Port:
18089 - SSL: off, login: empty
This only works while your phone is on your home Wi-Fi.
Enable Tor in the wallet, or install Orbot and route the wallet through it. Then add a custom node:
- Address:
YOUR_RPC_ONION.onion - Port:
18089
Connecting through Tor is slower, but it works from any network without opening ports.
Trusted node
Some wallets have a "trusted" toggle for a node. Mark only your own node as trusted.
Seed and backups¶
Your phone can break, get lost or be stolen. Make sure each mobile wallet's seed is written down on paper, and test restoring it once with a small amount.
Troubleshooting¶
The wallet can't reach the onion node
- Make sure Tor is really on for this app. With Orbot, use its VPN mode and add the wallet to Orbot's list of apps.
- Enter the onion address without
http://, and the port18089separately if the wallet has a port field. - Test the same onion address from a computer (see 2.2). If it fails there too, the problem is on the node.
It works at home but not elsewhere
That's expected for the LAN setting: NODE_IP only exists on your home network. Use the onion address when you're away.
Syncing on the phone is very slow
Over Tor, a wallet that has been offline for weeks needs a while to catch up. Open it more often, so it has less to scan each time. For the first sync of a restored wallet, connect at home over the LAN.
